Lift Every Voice – Opening Reception and Talk

September 7 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Discover the profound impact of artist Elizabeth Catlett’s iconic “I am the Black Woman” series through the “Lift Every Voice” exhibit. Fifteen meticulously reproduced hooked rugs, created collaboratively by American and Canadian women, pay homage to African American struggles, resilience, and triumph.

This exhibit highlights Elizabeth Catlett’s legacy by exploring the linocuts that commemorate African American stories, resistance, and survival. These prints were later featured in a children’s book alongside James Weldon Johnson’s timeless anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” now recognized as the Black National Anthem.

Curator Maddy Fraioli delves into the fascinating journey behind the creation of the “Lift Every Voice” exhibit. The artists reflect on Ms. Catlett’s powerful message and convey it through their own artistry. Join us for an inspiring exploration of history, creativity, and empowerment.

The exhibit will be open Sept. 7th to Nov. 2nd; Tues.-Sat. 10AM – 4PM.
